Neighboring Churches Donate $6,000 to Biwabik

BIWABIK, MN (August 12, 2002) - The Evangelical Covenant Church of Biwabik received a helping hand recently from neighboring churches, receiving $6,000 in donations from 19 local congregations.

The gifts will help finish about half of a proposed 10,000-square-foot building by Christmas, according to pastor Jeffrey Jones. The church had begun a "Catch the Vision-Finish the Work" Biwabik
fundraiserfundraising project and raised about $30,000 by the end of May. That money will help the church work on a new fellowship hall, education space and bathrooms for the building, which is being constructed on 7.3 acres of land.

Another $60,000 was needed to finish a sanctuary project within the building, Jones said. The recent gift by local churches did wonders for the congregation, he added.

"We are praising the Lord for His provision," said Jones. "Eighteen local churches (of various denominations) got together the third week in July and put on five fundraising dinners for our church. One more dinner will take place August 15. So far they have raised nearly $3,000. First Covenant Church of Virginia also sent us $3,000 in the same week. We have a long way to go, but day by day, He is providing."

In August 1998, fire destroyed the church building. The congregation has been worshiping in a local senior center since August 2000. Jones said that summer projects have progressed well thus far. Much of the plumbing for the new building has been finished and floor preparations are close to being completed.

On August 4, a work crew of more than two dozen from the Britt, Iowa, Evangelical Free Church assisted the church with a Vacation Bible School as well as other building projects. Arrangements have also been made to bring the church a load of donated sheetrock for upcoming projects. Earlier this year, a total of 47 windows were donated, some through Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis.
