Scrappers Overcome Scholars to Win Championship
CHICAGO, IL (August 26, 2002) - Nikki Carlson and Matt King had RBI singles in a
three-run fourth inning to put Covenant Office ahead and the Scrappers made
the lead stand up,  beating the North Park
Theological Seminary (NPTS) Scholars 9-8 Sunday night for the Covenant
Softball League of Chicago championship.
Matt Dyment opened the inning with a single and scored on Carlson's single.
King drove in Carlson with his hit and Joel Pearson hit a sacrifice fly for
the final run of the inning. Eric Carlson added a two-run double in the
fifth inning and King added an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth inning
to score Matt Dyment (who had singled) for what proved to be the winning
run.
NPTS scored twice in the top of the seventh inning on five hits, but
Covenant Office got the final out as the Scholars stranded two runners.
Earlier in the inning, Covenant Office threw out a runner at the plate.
King was 3-for-3 to lead both teams. Other Covenant Office runs came from
Eric Johnson, who had a two-run single in the third inning, and Pearson,
who produced the first of two sacrifice flies to drive home his team's
first run in the second inning.
The Scholars had three hits in the top of the first inning, including an
RBI single by JoAnn Deasy, to take an early 1-0 lead. They led 3-0 in the
top of the second, scoring a pair of unearned runs, and then scored another
in the fourth with the aid of another Covenant Office error. Five players
had two hits for NPTS and Brian Simpson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly
as the Scholars out-hit Covenant Office 14-12.
The two teams will play an exhibition game at 9:30 p.m. Thursday at
Thillens Stadium, located at the corner of Kedzie and Devon, on Chicago's
north side. The game will benefit Ravenswood Covenant Church Childcare
Center, which is opening this fall out of Ravenswood Covenant Church.
Admission for Thursday's game is $3 for adults and $1 for children ages 5
through 14. Kids under 5 are admitted free. For more information, call
