Memorial Service Pending for Alfred Ulner
SPRING VALLEY, CA (August 29, 2002) - Funeral services are pending for longtime
Covenant pastor Alfred Ulner, who died August 7 at Mt. Miguel Covenant
Village.
The 83-year-old Ulner had been receiving full-time nursing care at Mt.
Miguel Covenant Village for some time before his death. He served more than
three decades in Covenant pastorates.
Born October 16, 1918, in Moline, Illinois, Ulner came to a saving faith in
Jesus Christ when he was 21. After marrying Alice Carlson of Paxton,
Illinois, in 1942, he served in the Air Force during World War II. He
stated his desire to enter the ministry at an evangelistic service shortly
before being discharged from military duty and began his education for that
purpose shortly thereafter. He earned his undergraduate degree in
Christianity from nearby Augustana College in Rock Island in 1949. He
finished his studies at North Park Theological Seminary in 1953 and was
ordained as a Covenant pastor in 1956.
After seminary, Ulner served from 1953 to 1957 at Factoria Covenant Church
in Bellevue, Washington; from 1957 to 1965 at Berkeley Covenant Church in
Berkeley, California; from 1965 to 1971 at West Phoenix Covenant Church in
Phoenix, Arizona; from 1971 to 1975 he served simultaneously at the
Evangelical Covenant Church of Ishpeming, Michigan, and nearby Mission
Covenant Church of Negaunee; and from 1975 until his retirement in 1983 he
served at First Covenant Church in Mason City, Iowa.
Following a brief interim pastorate in Pennock, Minnesota, the Ulners moved
to Desert Hot Springs, California, where he served as a chaplain at a local
mobile home park before heading to Mt. Miguel Covenant Village. He and his
wife also served during a number of short-term missionary assignments for
Worldwide Evangelism for Christ International in Pennsylvania during their
retirement years.
Ulner is survived by daughters Nancy Land, Karen Merritt, Janet Cassady,
Marlys Manthei and Sharon Khalsa. Ulner was preceded in death by his wife,
Alice, who died January 1, 1997.
