Service Held for Former Teacher, Coach Les Harman
CHICAGO, IL (September 3, 2002) - Funeral services were held August 29 at
Libertyville Covenant Church for former North Park Academy teacher and
basketball coach Les Harman, who died August 25 at Westmoreland Care Center
in Lake Forest.
The 85-year-old Harman was born September 4, 1916, in Chicago and attended
Northwestern University, playing baseball and basketball. After earning his
undergraduate and master's degrees at Northwestern, he taught at North Park
Academy and coached the basketball team for two years (1941-43), compiling
a 22-19 record.
Harman later served in World War II as a lieutenant and division officer in
the U.S. Navy. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his efforts. After the war,
he taught at two schools in Oak Park and served as a counselor and coach at
Barrington High School in the northwest suburbs.
He was elected to the Illinois State High School Coaches Hall of Fame. He
also refereed basketball games, including some in the Big Ten. Before
retiring in 1975, he was principal and then superintendent of North Chicago
Community High School. He also served on President Nixon's Advisory Council
for Education.
Preceded in death by his wife, Jayne (Olson) in 1999, Harman is survived by
children Steven of Waukegan, Pamela Bernardi of Lake Forest, Darrel of
Edina, Minnesota, and Randall (and wife Rita) of Norcross, Georgia. He also
is survived by five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
