Wisconsin Lutheran Defeats Vikings

MILWAUKEE, WI (September 30, 2002) - Wisconsin Lutheran College scored on its first two possessions and defeated North Park University (NPU) 34-7 in a non-league football game Saturday, dropping the Vikings to 1-2 overall.

The home team scored just 4:53 into the contest on a one-yard run by quarterback Jeff Lemke. It added another first period touchdown on a 30-yard run by Carmelo Vasquez and eventually took a 20-0 lead at the half.

North Park missed two field goals and fumbled deep in Wisconsin Lutheran territory in the third period - a play that ended with Caleb Bentz returning the fumble 75 yards for a touchdown. The Vikings scored their only touchdown in the fourth quarter as Scott Sousa returned an interception nine yards for a score, the second scoring interception return for Sousa in two weeks.

Josh Gruenewald had 113 yards on 27 rushes to pace the NPU offense. Phil DeWald completed 14 of 25 passes for 146 yards while wide receiver Jon Harris caught eight passes for 104 yards.

NPU travels to Illinois Wesleyan University for a 1 p.m. game Saturday, the opening College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin contest for both teams.
