Wisconsin Lutheran Defeats Vikings
MILWAUKEE, WI (September 30, 2002) - Wisconsin Lutheran College scored on its
first two possessions and defeated North Park University (NPU) 34-7 in a
non-league football game Saturday, dropping the Vikings to 1-2 overall.
The home team scored just 4:53 into the contest on a one-yard run by
quarterback Jeff Lemke. It added another first period touchdown on a
30-yard run by Carmelo Vasquez and eventually took a 20-0 lead at the
half.
North Park missed two field goals and fumbled deep in Wisconsin Lutheran
territory in the third period - a play that ended with Caleb Bentz
returning the fumble 75 yards for a touchdown. The Vikings scored their
only touchdown in the fourth quarter as Scott Sousa returned an
interception nine yards for a score, the second scoring interception
return
for Sousa in two weeks.
Josh Gruenewald had 113 yards on 27 rushes to pace the NPU offense. Phil
DeWald completed 14 of 25 passes for 146 yards while wide receiver Jon
Harris caught eight passes for 104 yards.
NPU travels to Illinois Wesleyan University for a 1 p.m. game Saturday,
the
opening College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin contest for both
teams.
