Renowned Guitar Duo Opens North Park's New Season
CHICAGO, IL (October 4, 2002) - Chamber Music at North Park launches its
2002-03 season at 7:30 p.m., November 1, with the Chicago appearance by
Brazilian-born brothers Sergio and Odair Assad, an internationally known
guitar duo.
It is the first time that the North Park series has presented a program
devoted solely to guitar music. The concert at North Park's Anderson
Chapel will include music by three contemporary composers, Brazil native
Egberto Gismonti, Cuban-born Leo Brouwer, and Spaniard J.Rodrigo, who
died in 1999. Pieces by Argentinean tango legend Astor Piazolla, Claude
Debussy, and Domenico Scarlatti will also be performed.
The Assads have been playing guitar together since childhood. Catapulted
to international fame in 1979 after winning a major European young
artists competition, the brothers, who are two years apart in age, have
since performed regularly in major music centers around the globe.
Their disc of Piazolla music recorded with Yo-Yo Ma (Sony Classical) was
awarded a Grammy in 1998.
Chamber Music at North Park is a four concert series that is held
annually and adheres to a two-fold commitment to education and
entertainment. The series was founded in 1981 by director Elizabeth
Buccheri.
Tickets for the November 1 concert are $15 for adults; $10 for seniors,
the disabled, and non North Park students. The concert is free for
North Park students with identification. The four event series
subscription is $37.50. For more information on the concert, call the
