Vikings to Meet North Central for Homecoming Game
BLOOMINGTON, IL (October 7, 2002) - Chris Ross scored four touchdowns to tie a
school record as Illinois Wesleyan University defeated North Park
University (NPU) 49-9 in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin
football game Saturday afternoon.
Ross scored on runs of 2, 14 and 45 yards in the first quarter to give the
Titans (4-0, 1-0 in conference) a 21-0 lead. He added a yard-scoring run
later in the contest and had 187 yards on 25 rushing attempts. Meanwhile,
the Titans defense limited North Park to three Ryan Johnson field goals,
holding the Vikings to just 169 total yards.
North Park (1-3, 0-1) hosts North Central College in a 1 p.m. conference
game Saturday to celebrate Homecoming for the Vikings.
In other NPU sports action:
- The soccer teams gained a split of their games at Illinois Wesleyan.
The women's team fell to 7-4, 1-3 in conference, with a 4-0 loss to the
Titans, while the men's team beat Illinois Wesleyan 4-1 later that evening.
Greger Svensson, John Sheridan, Shawn White and Fredrick Airosto had the
NPU goals.
- In golf, Pam Landin represented North Park at the conference golf meet
and placed 16th individually with a score of 182 for two rounds. Gail
Nelson of Illinois Wesleyan won the individual title at the Pontiac Elks
Golf Club with a score of 152 while the Titans won the team championship.
- At Lake Forest College, the Vikings (7-13) went 1-2 at the Forester
Invitational volleyball tourney Saturday as defensive specialist Amanda
Klufetos made the All Tournament squad. NPU lost to Dominican and eventual
team champion Lake Forest before ending the event with a victory over
Beloit College.
- At West Allis, Wisconsin, the Vikings competed in the Wisconsin
Lutheran Warrior Cross Country Invitational. The women's team won the team
title with 41 points, beating Principia College (61 points) and six other
teams. Becky Gritter was third overall, running a 20:25 for five
kilometers. Teammates Kerri Thompson (20:30) and Grace Conrad (20:32) were
fourth and fifth while Lucia Abel (21:37) and Allison Weller (22:01)
finished 12th and 18th respectively. The men were third of seven teams with
81 points. Principia won the team title with 40 points. Chris Gruenewald
ran a 28:41 for eight kilometers for eighth place and NPU teammate Karl
Hench was 10th with a 28:44 clocking. Luke Prince was 13th in 28:56 for the
Vikings, who participate in their annual Alumni meet Saturday at 10 a.m. at
Legion Park to celebrate Homecoming weekend.
