Soccer, Worship Help Promote CHIC to Varied Cultures
CHICAGO, IL (October 9, 2002) - The Central Conference CHIC Mix and the CHIC
Prayer Mix teams were designed to help promote a triennial high school
conference that would bring many cultures together.
An Evangelical Covenant Church "Covenant Cup" soccer tournament organized
by both groups last Saturday was one way to begin the process.
The event, headed by CHIC Mix coordinator Dale Lusk (who heads Merge
Ministries in McAllen, Texas) and Central Conference CHIC liaison
coordinators Kirsten Nelson and Stacey Greely served as a fundraiser and
also provided an opportunity for different cultures to mix - one of the
main objectives of CHIC2K3. The event at North Park University's soccer
field also raised money to help fund CHIC2K3 scholarships for young people
from Hispanic churches.
Two Hispanic churches responded to the invitation to participate. La
Iglesia del Pacto Grace of Chicago bought uniforms bearing the Covenant
logo and church name. Women from the church made food to sell. La Iglesia
del Pacto Albany Park pastor Gabriel Quiroga and his wife, Carmen, came to
support the effort and their youth group spent the
previous evening with youth director Libby Englehorn preparing baked goods
for the tournament.
North Park Covenant Church entered a youth team in the tournament. La
Iglesia del Pacto Grace entered a men's team and North Park Theological
Seminary also put together a men's team. The CHIC committees added other
teams from spectators and staffers and all who participated seemed to have
a good time, according to Covenant Cup representatives.
During a 30-minute halftime show later in the morning, Lusk, a council
member for CHIC2K3, explained the concept of CHIC (the denomination's
triennial high school conference) and encouraged Hispanic youth to
register. Danny Martinez, a Los Angeles pastor and a member of the CHIC2K3
band, and Fabian Quiroga taught some of the Spanish CHIC2K3 worship songs
that will be sung at the CHIC2K3 site at the University of Tennessee in
Knoxville next summer.
Lusk said the Covenant Cup is one of a number of events being used to
promote CHIC2K3 to non-Anglo congregations. On October 19 in Turlock,
California, Northern California Spanish-speaking church youth groups will
meet for an all-day event. On October 26, the Covenant church in Bell
Gardens will bring Hispanic, Asian and African-American youth groups
together.
On November 16, a group of Southeast Conference African American church
youth groups will meet for a CHIC2K3 promotional event in Atlanta. On the
same day, New York City churches will meet at Fellowship Covenant Church in
the Bronx and the Chicago area African-American church youth will meet at
North Park University in a "Singspiration" that will include various youth
music groups.
