Granby (CT) Church Celebrates 100th Anniversary
GRANBY, CT (October 10, 2002) - Pilgrim Covenant Church in Granby celebrated
its
100th anniversary last weekend with East Coast Conference Supt. Robert
C.
Dvorak speaking at the morning worship service on Sunday.
Evangelical Covenant Church missionary Jay Haworth of Japan was a
special
guest on Sunday, having previously served as a previous pastor at the
church. Other previous pastors at the event included Fred Lawson and
Dennis
Moon. Birnie Jackson, who is the
oldest member of the church, spoke about the history of the church. The
church bought property from the Jackson family to build the current
edifice
and the family donated land to the church more recently.
The church hosted a meal and variety show on Saturday evening where
guests
dressed in period costume of the Granby farmers and villagers of 1902.
Moon
and Haworth spoke during Saturday's festivities.
Pilgrim Covenant, located in a town of 9,000 in north central
Connecticut,
highlighted several "Centennial Moments" during the worship services
throughout 2002. The church also produced a rotating centennial
anniversary
display in its foyer.
Swedish settlers helped found Pilgrim Covenant, receiving assistance
from
what is now a Covenant church in nearby Springfield, Massachusetts. The
church was founded in 1902 as the Swedish Christians of North Granby.
Its
first pastor, John Thunberg, arrived in 1903. It became an official
Covenant congregation at the Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Covenant
Church in 1965.
Pilgrim Covenant averages about 150 in worship attendance under interim
pastor Robert McNaughton. For more information about the church, call
