Missionaries in No Immediate Danger Following Bombings
MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA (October 18, 2002) - Covenant missionaries are in no immediate
danger following car bomb explosions this morning that killed eleven and
injured others, Covenant News has learned.
House-to-house fighting erupted following the explosions, which follow
three days of fighting in Colombia's largest city. Government troops are
attempting to regain control of the affected portions of the city.
"Covenant missionaries are in no immediate danger," said David Mark,
regional coordinator for Latin America for the Evangelical Covenant Church.
However, should the level of danger increase further, evacuations may need
to be considered, he added.
Covenant missionaries living in Medellin include Cathy Campobello and Gary
and Mary Lou Sanders and their three children.
Sources close to the fighting are not certain who is responsible for the
outbreak of violence, but suspect it may involve members of one or more
rebel groups that are active in the area.
More information will be posted to this Covenant web site as it becomes
available.
