Covenanter Heads Major Canadian Charity
CALGARY, AB (October 30, 2002) - Sharol Josephson of the Hope Community
Covenant Church of Strathmore has accepted a position as Canadian director
of Operation Christmas Child, the largest project at Samaritan's
Purse-Canada, headquartered in Calgary.
For the past two years Josephson has hosted Canadian Living Television, a
half-hour program on the Life Network cable station airing weekdays. Her
husband, Neil, is
president of Covenant Bible College, which includes campuses in Strathmore,
Alberta, Windsor, Colorado, and LaMerced, Ecuador.
Before working with Canadian Living Television, Josephson spent most of her
20 years as a television news anchor in the provinces of Saskatchewan,
British Columbia and Alberta. She earned four Can-Pro Awards given by the
Canadian Association of Broadcasters for the best in Canadian television.
She also was named Best Entertainment/Current Affairs Host in the TV
Week Viewer's Choice Awards.
Josephson has been involved in numerous charitable efforts during her
career, including Samaritan's Purse, the Leprosy Mission and several
Canadian women's shelters and agencies. Working with Samaritan's Purse will
allow Josephson to use her ministry gifts more effectively and will
decrease her travel schedule. For more than six months each year, Josephson
flew from Calgary to Toronto every Sunday evening to tape Canadian Living
Television shows, returning to her home on Thursday.
In her new role, Josephson says she will travel to various countries and
regional sites, noting that follow-up work in various areas will be an
important component.
"I feel very strongly that being a Christian in any business is critical -
you're called to live out your faith in any workplace," says Josephson.
"But I felt very strongly that this was time for a change and I do feel it
will be a way to use both my faith and professional skills. I feel like I'm
being obedient to where God is calling me in my life and
it's very exciting."
Samaritan's Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization
providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.
Started in 1970 by Dr. Robert Pierce, Samaritan's Purse, with its main
headquarters in Boone, North Carolina, has been in existence since 1970 and
is now run by president and chairman Franklin
Graham. Last year, Samaritan's Purse reached more than 115 countries with
nearly $130 million in direct aid.
Operation Christmas Child is expected to provide more than six million gift
boxes to needy children and teens throughout the world this year. It has
already distributed more than 18 million box gifts to 112 countries since
1993, including more than five million last Christmas. In Canada, Operation
Christmas Child has distributed three million gift boxes during the past
decade.
