Triple Espresso Concludes European Debut in Ireland
DUBLIN, IRELAND (November 4, 2002) - Michael Pearce Donley and Bob Stromberg of
Roseville Covenant Church in Roseville, Minnesota, along with Bill Arnold,
finished a six-week European debut Saturday with Triple Espresso, a
comedy about a once-promising comedy team reuniting 25 years after their
initial attempt at stardom.
Pearce Donley (left in accompanying photo) serves in his church's music and
worship ministries. Stromberg, a graduate of North Park University (then
College), has been involved in various Covenant-sponsored events since the
1970s. They and Arnold began Triple Espresso in 1995 and have since
launched other groups that perform as part of Triple Espresso Company. The
trio performed at Andrew Lane Theatre as part of the ESB Dublin
International Theatre Festival from September 27-November 2. The show also
ran in Springfield, Massachusetts, in October and recently began a six-week
schedule in Des Moines, Iowa. It has been running in San Diego, California,
for nearly six years.
Besides achieving success in Minnesota, where the show has a permanent
site, Triple Espresso is expected to become the longest-running show
in San Diego history in the coming weeks. It made its debut in San Diego in
May 1997 and has grossed $7.5 million. The San Diego Union Tribune
wrote about the play's unlikely rise to prominence in the local theater
community, stating, "It's one goofball laugh machine that deserves its
success."
The success, "over the pond," shouldn't be surprising given that all kinds
of audiences from Providence, Rhode Island, to Portland, Oregon, have
enjoyed laughing with Hugh Butternut (Donley), Bobby Bean (Stromberg), and
Buzz Maxwell (Arnold) as they attempt to make it big.
"The ebullient Donley, the amiable Stromberg and, especially, the deadpan
Arnold never go too long without a bright moment or a good belly laugh,"
wrote the Chicago Tribune.
