Oberlin (KS) Church Marks 50 Years of Ministry

OBERLIN, KS (November 12, 2002) - Oberlin Covenant Church celebrated its 50th anniversary with a number of events November 2-3, beginning with a Saturday evening dinner and ending with a turkey luncheon following worship service Sunday.

Rick Mylander, associate superintendent of the Midwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church, was one of the speakers during the weekend.

Oberlin Covenant Church was started with the help of two nearby Covenant churches - Herndon Covenant Church and Lund Covenant Church. The first fellowship meeting was held October 28, 1952 with 21 charter members in attendance. The church joined the denomination in 1953.

Mathilda Erikson provided lay leadership in the church's early years until Clarence Swanson became the first permanent pastor in June 1954. The current church under pastor Heidi Wiebe averages 50 in worship attendance in a town of 2,000 in northwest Kansas.

For more information about the church, contact Wiebe at 785-475-2769.
