Former Swedish Bishop to Speak February 26

CHICAGO, IL (February 4, 2003) - Krister Stendahl, former bishop of the Church of Sweden and Dean Emeritus at Harvard Divinity School, will give a lecture at Anderson Chapel on February 26.

The lecture, entitled "A New Church for a New World: A Swedish-American Perspective," will begin at 7:30 p.m. The event, sponsored by North Park Theological Seminary, is free and open to the public.

Stendahl grew up in Stockholm, Sweden, and was educated at Uppsala University. An ordained pastor, he finished his Th.D. degree at Uppsala in 1954 and spent 30 years at Harvard before returning to his hometown to become bishop in his native church. Following retirement in 1988, he returned to Harvard and served as chaplain to Harvard Divinity School until 1991. He then went to Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, and was the Myra and Robert Kraft and Jacob Hiatt Distinguished Professor of Christian Studies until 1993.
