Illinois Wesleyan Edges North Park Vikings

CHICAGO, IL (February 21, 2003) - Eric Starkey converted a three-point play with five seconds left in double overtime as visiting Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) edged North Park University (NPU) 98-97 Wednesday night.

Sneed Deaderick had a shot at winning the game for NPU but missed a jump shot after Starkey's game-winning effort. Deaderick had 26 points and teammate Irving Richardson had 31 points and nine rebounds for the Vikings, who fell to 12-10, 2-10 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play.

IWU moved to 18-4, 9-2 in conference, getting 19 points apiece from Eric Silagi and John Camardella. The Titans made 38 of 39 foul shots to help themselves climb back from a 48-26 halftime deficit. They extended the game into a second overtime on a lay-up by Adam Dauksas that tied the game at 88-all. And they ended the game with an 8-2 run after trailing 95-90 with 1:59 left in the second extra session.

NPU began the game with nine straight points and forced 11 IWU turnovers in taking a seemingly insurmountable halftime edge. But IWU took the lead late in the second half before two Deaderick foul shots with 16 seconds left in regulation play tied the contest at 75-75.

The Vikings face CCIW rival North Central College in Naperville Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
