Nyvall Lectureship to Feature Barnard Professor
CHICAGO, IL (February 24, 2003) - Randall Balmer, Ph.D., will be the featured
speaker at North Park Theological Seminary's 2003 David Nyvall Lectureship
on March 19.
Balmer's first lecture, "Ties that Bind: Growing up in the Household of
Faith," will begin at 9 a.m. in Isaacson Chapel (Nyvall Hall). Balmer's
second lecture, "The Foolishness of Preaching," will begin at 10:45 a.m.
Both lectures are free and open to the public.
The David Nyvall Lectureship was inaugurated at North Park Theological
Seminary in 1951 in memory of the pioneer Swedish American educator who
served the school both as teacher and president. The purpose of this
lecture series, held each spring, is to stimulate interest in the
interpretation of the Christian message for the contemporary world.
Balmer is the Ann Whitney Olin Professor of American Religion at Barnard
College. He is the author of A Perfect Babel of Confusion: Dutch
Religion and English Culture in the Middle Colonies, Protestantism in
America, and Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory: A Journey Into the
Evangelical Subculture in America. Balmer was nominated for an Emmy for
writing and hosting a documentary made from the latter book.
