Women's Track and Field Place Fifth in Wheaton
WHEATON, IL (March 30, 2003) - Lucia Abel won the long jump and triple jump
events as the North Park University (NPU) women's track and field team
placed fifth at the Wheaton Invitational last Saturday.
Abel leaped 17 feet, 2 inches to win the long jump and had a triple jump
effort of 36 feet, 10 and one-quarter inches. Teammate Lacretia Carroll
leaped 34 feet, 7 inches for third in the triple jump. Abel also placed
seventh in the 200-meter dash in 23.27 seconds. Carroll won the 400-meter
hurdles in a time of 1:05.9 while teammate Kersta Johnson was eighth in
1:12.0.
Grace Conrad was North Park's other individual winner in women's
competition, running her 5,000-meter race with a 19:17.4 clocking. The
Vikings had 49 points as Carthage won the team title with 116 points.
In the men's team competition, College of DuPage had 87 points for first
place while NPU was 10th with 39.17 points. In the men's 100-meter dash,
Ahkeem Waterford and Randle Williams tied for fourth in 11.0 while
teammates Josh Gruenewald and Dante Britten tied for eighth in 11.3.
Gruenewald (23.27) was sixth in the 200 while Matt Wheeler's 50.97 in the
400 was good for third and Conor Johnson's 59.82 was good for fourth in the
400 hurdles. The 400 relay team was first in 42.90 while the 3,200 relay
was third overall.
