Funeral Service Held for Esther Liljegren
SCOTTSDALE, AZ (April 15, 2003) - Funeral services were scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
today at Valley Presbyterian Church in Scottsdale for Esther Liljegren, who
died on April 9 after a 15-month battle with cancer. She was the wife of
longtime Covenant pastor William Liljegren,
Born September 2, 1926, Esther Liljegren was a faithful partner in
ministry, putting her gifts of service and hospitality and her musical
skills to good use while her husband served four decades as a pastor in
numerous churches. William Liljegren finished his ministerial education at
North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago and then served at The Covenant
Church of Thomaston, Connecticut; North Park Covenant Church in
Chicago; Squaw Peak Covenant Church in Phoenix, Arizona; and Bethel
Covenant Church in Flossmoor, Illinois, before officially retiring in 1985
and moving permanently to the Phoenix area. During her husband's pastorate
in Flossmoor, Esther was a secretary and registrar at Bloom High School in
Chicago Heights.
Esther is survived by her husband of 56 years, William, and three children:
Sally Thomas (and husband Randy), John Liljegren (Cindy) and Nancy (Tom - a
Covenant pastor) Nelson. Other survivors include her sister, Evelyn (Carl)
Eckberg, brother Harry, and seven natural grandchildren and many nieces and
nephews. A sister, Dorothy, and a brother, Melvin (and his wife Shirley),
preceded Esther in death.
