Donald Madvig, Eugene Peterson to Receive Honorary Degrees
CHICAGO, IL (April 22, 2003) - North Park Theological Seminary will celebrate its
112th commencement at a convocation and consecration service at 4 p.m.
Friday, May 9, in Anderson Chapel.
Seminary President and Dean John E. Phelan Jr. will preside and will confer
degrees and orientation certificates, including one Doctor of Ministry in
Preaching, 22 Master of Divinity, three Master of Arts in Theological
Studies, two Master of Arts in Christian Education and five Master of Arts
in Christian Ministry degrees.
Honorary doctorates will be awarded to retired Covenant pastor and
professor Donald H. Madvig, as well as author and retired pastor Eugene H.
Peterson who will deliver the commencement address.
Madvig served Baptist and Evangelical Covenant Church congregations in
Minnesota, Nebraska, Massachusetts, Illinois, South Dakota, Wisconsin,
Connecticut and Vermont. He served as professor of Old Testament at North
American Baptist Seminary, professor of biblical literature at North Park
Theological Seminary and professor of biblical literature at Bethel
Theological Seminary. Madvig was the translator of Typos: The
Typological Interpretation of the Old Testament in the New Testament
and The Good News According to Mark. He is the author of the
commentary on the Book of Joshua in The Expositor's Bible Commentary
and various articles in The Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia of the
Bible, The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia and The New
International Dictionary of New Testament Theology. He also did
editorial work on the New International Version of the Bible. Madvig
is a member and vice chair of the Committee on Bible Translation, a former
member of the Board of the Ministry of the Evangelical Covenant Church and
a former member of the board of the Door County Affiliate of Habitat for
Humanity.
He has a Bachelor of Arts from Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota; a
Bachelor of Divinity from Bethel Theological Seminary, a Master of Theology
in New Testament from Fuller Theological Seminary and a Master of Arts and
Doctorate, both in Mediterranean studies, from Brandeis University. He and
his wife, LaVerne E. (Wall), have had six children and13 grandchildren.
Peterson is a full-time writer and professor emeritus of spiritual theology
at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. He has taught at New York
Theological Seminary, Towson State University, St. Mary's Seminary and
Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. In addition to serving as pastor of Towson
Presbyterian Church in Maryland and White Plains Presbyterian Church in New
York, Peterson, who was ordained in the
Presbyterian Church USA in 1958, also served as founding pastor of Christ
Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Maryland.
In 1992, after 29 years of service at Christ Our King, Peterson began his
paraphrase of The Message, read by more than 10 million people.
Peterson has written dozens of other books, including Allegories of
Heaven, Excellence, A Long Obedience
in the Same Direction, Perseverance, Psalms: Prayers of the Heart, The
Psalms: An Artist's Impression and Run with the Horses.
Peterson has a Bachelor of Arts from Seattle Pacific University, a Bachelor
of Sacred Theology from New York Theological Seminary and a Master of Arts
in semitic languages from Johns Hopkins University. He also received an
honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Seattle Pacific University and an
honorary Doctor of Sacred Theology from Messiah College. He and his wife,
Janice Stubbs, live in Montana, and have three children and six
grandchildren.
Founded in 1891 by the Evangelical Covenant Church, North Park University
is located on Chicago's north side and enrolls more than 2,600 students
from around the world.
