Lucia Abel Wins Long Jump Competition
WHEATON, IL (May 4, 2003) - Lucia Abel won the long jump competition and placed
second in the javelin toss for the North Park University (NPU) women's
track team in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin track and
field meet last weekend.
Abel leaped 18 feet, 2 and one-quarter inches in the long jump and her
throw of 112 feet, 4 inches put her only behind Augustana College's Carol
Reif, who won the event with a throw of 124 feet, 2 inches. Abel also
finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 37
feet, 3 inches, just behind teammate Lacretia Carroll (37-10 and
three-quarters) and Millikin University's Angie Hawk (38-6 and three
quarters).
Carroll fared well in the 200-meter and 400-meter aces, placing third and
fourth respectively. Sarah Baker placed seventh in the discus for North
Park's other individual points. The Vikings had 48 points while Carthage
College won its first women's team
title ever with 176 points.
In the men's competition, NPU sprinters Dante Britten and Randle Williams
placed sixth and seventh respectively in the 100-meter dash; Conor Johnson
was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles; Matt Wheeler was fifth in the 400;
Jerry Kosiba was fifth in the decathlon and Will Mejia was seventh in the
shot put as the Vikings posted 29 team points to place eighth, well behind
the 254 points by team champ North Central College.
