Covenant Companion Wins 11 Awards
CHICAGO, IL (May 9, 2003) - The Covenant Companion, consistently named one
of the best
denominational magazines in North America, won a record eleven awards at
the recent 2003 Associated Church Press convention. Nine contributors
shared the eleven awards, which included two second place and nine third
place finishes.
Deric Gilliard of Stone Mountain, Georgia, won second place in the
"First-Person Account" category for "An Unspeakable Kinship," his account
of a visit by African American Covenant leaders to the Congo in the June
2002 Companion. "I could feel the writer's excitement, it grew with
each sentence," wrote judge Richelle L. Turner, city editor for business,
health, science and environment for the Columbia Missourian.
In the editorial categories, staff writer Craig Pinley won second place for
"Most Personally Useful" for his article, "A Hidden Danger," in the
November 2002 issue. "This story (on the hidden dangers of church vans)
could save lives," wrote judge John Schneller, metro editor of the
Columbia Missourian.
John E. Phelan Jr., president of North Park Theological Seminary, won third
place in the editorial/opinion category for "The Sad, Strange Case of John
Walker Lindh" in February 2002. "Lost in Translation" by features editor
Bob Smietana won awards in both the feature and in-depth- coverage
categories (May 2002). Rowena Coetsee, religion writer
for the Antioch Leger Dispatch, who attends Hillside Covenant Church
in
Walnut Creek, California, won for "A raw-boned Man with a Heart of Gold," a
profile of Covenanter Wally Linskoog in May 2002. Contributor Linda Spenser
Moore won for "The Miracle of the Long John" in the
devotional/inspirational category for her article in the February 2002
issue. Ben Helphand won for "Days of Grace" (magazine news story,
October 2002) and managing editor Jane Swanson-Nystrom won a third place
award for editing "Our Readers Write" in the February 2002 issue.
In the design categories, designer Steve Luce and Companion editor Don
Meyer won third place in the four-color cover category for "The Face of
Christ" in March 2002, and art director David Westerfield won in the 1-2
color spread for "Tell Me a Story," May 2002.
The Associated Church Press, believed to be the oldest religious press
organization in the United States, has more than 175 members with a
combined circulation of 28 million.
