North Park Seminary Awards 33 Degrees

CHICAGO, IL (May 12, 2003) - A total of 33 individuals received degrees during North Park Theological Seminary's 2003 Commencement and Consecration Service last Friday in Anderson Chapel.

Of the graduates, 22 were Master of Divinity students. There were also three Master of Arts in Theological Studies majors, two graduates of the Master of Arts in Christian Education program, five Master of Arts in Christian Ministry students and one who earned a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching.

President John Phelan presented Edward Banks Lyons with the Ahnfeldt Medallion for maintaining a 4.0 grade point average throughout his seminary studies - the highest grade point average in the graduating class.

Honorary degrees were conferred upon Dr. Eugene H. Peterson and former North Park Theological Seminary professor and retired Covenant pastor Dr. Donald H. Madvig. Peterson, longtime theology professor at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, and author of the noted translation of the Bible's New Testament, The Message, gave the commencement address. Dr. C. John Weborg presented Peterson for his honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree.

Madvig, professor of biblical studies at the seminary from 1969-1974, served as vice chair of the Committee on Bible Translation for the New International Version bible and is an ongoing consultant for that organization. Evangelical Covenant Church President Glenn Palmberg presented Madvig for his honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree.
