North Park Senior Earns All America Honors
CANTON, NY (May 27, 2003) - Senior Lacretia Carroll of Peoria, Illinois,
represented North Park University (NPU) in the NCAA Division III women's
track and field finals last weekend at St. Lawrence University, finishing
seventh in the triple jump competition and earning All America honors.
Carroll was one of eight women whose effort set a track record in the
triple jump last Friday night. She leaped 39 feet, 1 and three-quarter
inches as Darcell Edwards of McMurry University in Texas won the event with
a 42-0 jump. It was the second straight year Carroll had finished seventh
in the event, although she bettered her 2002 effort by five inches. At last
year's NCAA Division III track and field championships at Macalester
College in Minnesota, Edwards won the triple jump with a leap of 41-3 and
Carroll's 38-7 and one-half leap earned her seventh place.
An International Business major while at North Park, Carroll had leaped 38
feet, 7 inches to earn a spot as one of 20 competitors in the event. She
was second in the event at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin
outdoor track and field meet in early May. Carroll had qualified for the
400-meter event in the 2001 outdoor track and field nationals and was a
triple jump qualifier in the 2002 indoor nationals in Ada, Ohio. Her
versatility was evident throughout her career with the Vikings as she
regularly earned her team points in the 100, 200, 400, long jump and triple
jump.
Carroll was an All-State high school track and field performer and
continued her stellar athletic efforts while benefiting her college
community in many ways. She had received an Illinois Sheriff's Association
Scholarship during her college career after participating in track and
field and volleyball and participating in the black students' association.
She also volunteered as a tutor and at a local drop-in women's shelter.
