Portland Covenanter Named "Queen of Rosaria"
PORTLAND, OR (June 13, 2003) - Priscilla Isaacs of First Covenant Church of
Portland was named Queen of Rosaria during the City of Portland's 96th
annual Rose Festival, an annual series of events that attracts an
average of 2 million attendees.
Isaacs was named queen at a coronation ceremony held May 29 at the
Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland. The ceremony followed a
month of appearances for Isaacs and 13 other court members from Portland
high schools. Within hours, she was making an early morning appearance
on a local television station, and her busy schedule will continue
throughout June and beyond. According to the Portland Oregonian,
Rose Festival queens take off the final portion of school to begin
attending to their official duties.
Along with the honor, Isaacs received a $3,000 Portland Rose Festival
Association scholarship courtesy of Randall Realty Corporation.
A senior at Franklin High School, Isaacs is a youth group leader at
church and has been involved in a number of school activities. She
served as class vice president, spirit commissioner and community
relations coordinator, participated in varsity cheerleading, track and
field and dance teams, and was a member of the school yearbook,
Fellowship of Christian Athletes and other extracurricular
organizations. She plans to attend nearby Portland State University with
hopes of going into public relations, communications or broadcast
journalism.
Covenant Communications discovered Isaacs' recent honor after First
Covenant's youth pastor, Erik Cave, sent an email to www.covchurch.org,
calling her "an outstanding example of a student believer." Given the
credentials it takes to be part of the court, Isaacs needed to be a
pretty special student. To qualify for the Rose Festival Court, the
young woman must be a full-time student, be a member of the graduating
class, have a grade point average of at least 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale),
demonstrate good citizenship and have a good attendance record. The
candidates are also evaluated on character, communication and presence.
Perhaps most notable about Isaac was her sense of priorities, even in
the moments before she was chosen as Queen of Rosaria. According to the
Oregonian, Isaacs' last act before the coronation ceremony was
to lead prayer with her other court members.
