Memorial Service Scheduled for Harry Cullins
CHICAGO, IL (June 30, 2003) - A memorial service is scheduled at 3 p.m. on
July 25 at North Park Covenant Church in Chicago, for longtime Covenant
Office staff member Harry Cullins, 47, who died last Friday (June 27) at
Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Cullins, who had served the
Covenant Church for the past 16 years, handled accounts payable,
pensions and building services for the denominational office. He
impressed co-workers with his industriousness and generated friendships
with good humor and enjoyment of history, literature and the arts.
"It is an extremely great loss for our department to lose such a
valuable employee and friend," said Elliott Johnson, director of
finance/controller for the Evangelical Covenant Church. "His loyalty to
the Covenant was unbelievable. When rain or snow came at Covenant
offices, Harry would be here. When it flooded, he was in the basement
pumping out water. He didn't wait for instruction - he just worked. He
was always willing, ready and able to help out where needed."
Born in Sterling, Illinois, Cullins was the son of Arthur and the late
Lila Cullins. He moved to Princeton, when he was 12, grew up at the
Covenant Children's Home and graduated from Princeton High School in
1974. After working at Pioneer Hi-Bred Seed Corn Company for several
years, Cullins moved to Chicago to attend North Park University (then
College) where he majored in History and English. He graduated in 1985.
Cullins is survived by his father, Arthur Cullins and stepmother, Helen
Cullins, formerly of Sterling, Illinois; sisters LouAnn Williams of
Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Judy Scuffham of Deer Grove, Illinois;
brother Timothy; and step brothers Edward J. Bontty of San Diego,
California, Carlos Cortez and Richard Cortez of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Harry R. Cullins
Memorial Fund, c/o Citizens First National Bank Trust Department, 606
South Main Street, Princeton, IL, 61356. All funds received in memory of
Cullins will be distributed to various nonprofit organizations that
Harry supported.
