Johnston to Lead American Theological Society
PASADENA, CA (July 9, 2003) - Robert K. Johnston, an ordained Covenant
minister and professor at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, has
been elected president of the prestigious American Theological Society
(ATS) for 2003-2004.
Johnston, who served for 11 years as dean of North Park Theological
Seminary in Chicago, has been a faculty member at Fuller since 1993. He
served as provost at the school from 1993 to 1995 and is currently
professor of theology and culture. He and his wife, Catherine Barsotti,
attend Pasadena Covenant Church and write film reviews for The
Covenant Companion.
Along with his teaching and administrative work, Johnston has published
in a variety of fields, including Old Testament, evangelical theology,
and, most recently, theology and film. His recent works include Grace
Upon Grace (co-editor with Jonathan Wilson), Reel
Spirituality and Life Is Not Work/Work Is Not Life
(co-written with J. Walker Smith). He is general editor of the New
International Biblical Commentary Series, Old Testament.
The 100-member American Theological Society, which meets annually at
Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey to discuss current
theological issues, encompasses theologians from across the
denominational spectrum. Former presidents of the 92-year-old society
include scholars Paul Tillich, Reinhold Niebuhr, Avery Dulles, Geoffrey
Wainwright, and the founding editor of Christianity Today, Carl
F. H. Henry.
