Memorial Honors Young Man's Dreams
GRESHAM, OR (July 9, 2003) - Tim Smith Jr. never had the opportunity to pursue
his dream of flying for Missionary Aviation Fellowship (MAF), but his
family and friends hope that a memorial in his name may give wings to
someone else's aspirations.
A memorial fund has been established in the name of Tim Smith Jr., the
son of Covenant missionaries Tim and Helen Smith, who died last Thursday
of complications from a work-related accident. The fund will be
coordinated by Powell Valley Covenant Church and will be used to help
purchase an MAF airplane.
A memorial service was held Sunday at Powell Valley Covenant Church for
Tim Smith Jr. on what would have been his 23rd birthday. In addition to
his family and friends, the service was attended by representatives of
the Evangelical Covenant Church community, including President Glenn R.
Palmberg; John Notehelfer, interim executive minister of world mission;
David Stockamp, coordinator of church relations for Covenant World
Mission; Jim Sundholm, director of Covenant World Relief; and Africa
missionaries Marvin and Fern Wickstrom, Florence Gustafson, and Galen
Johnson.
After studying to become a pilot at LeTourneau University in Longview,
Texas, Tim Smith Jr. discovered he had a degenerative eye condition that
prevented him from flying for MAF, an organization he had become fond of
while his parents served in Congo (then Zaire). He changed his plans and
switched to mechanical engineering as his college major to pursue
becoming a plane mechanic instead.
MAF, headquartered in Redlands, California, provides aviation and
technological services to more than 300 Christian and humanitarian
organizations worldwide. It currently serves in 15 countries. For more
