California College Student Sets World Records

CHESTER, WV (July 26, 2003) - Josh Bryant of Montecito Covenant Church in Santa Barbara, California, won the Super Heavyweight Open division of the USA Powerlifting Federation Senior and Masters National Powerlifting Championships at the Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Resort on June 23,

Bryant, a senior at California State University-Northridge, lifted a combined total of 1,945 pounds in three events - the squat, bench press, and dead lift. He was also featured as part of ESPN 2 television coverage of the Mountaineer Cup V, which was also held in Chester, from June 22-24.

Bryant has increased his best lifts to 903 pounds in the squat, 622 in the bench press, and 749 in the dead lift. All of these lifts were made on June 8 at the American Powerlifting Federation Senior Nationals for a Junior World Record combined total of 2,276 pounds. His bench and squat event totals were also world records in that category.

At the American Powerlifting Federation (APF) West Coast Open in Newport, Oregon, earlier this year, Bryant had broken the junior American record by lifting 2,154 pounds in a combination of bench press, deadlight and squat events.
