Hanson's Team Earns Bid to the NBC World Series

FAIRBANKS, AK (July 30, 2003) - Jeff Hanson, who is from Hillside Covenant Church in Walnut Creek, California, pitched an 11-3 complete game victory over the Peninsula Oilers in the first of two games Sunday and helped Athletes in Action (AIA) earn a bid to the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series next month.

Hanson allowed nine hits in seven innings for his second straight impressive starting performance. An incoming senior at North Park University, he pitches in the Alaska Baseball League, considered one of the top amateur baseball leagues in the United States. His AIA team placed second in the league after winning five straight games.

After Hanson's victory, teammate Kyle Zaleski tossed a 5-0 shutout against Peninsula. On Monday, AIA beat the Anchorage Bucs to clinch second place. The AIA Fire and league champion Fairbanks Goldpanners will represent the Alaska Baseball League at the NBC World Series in Wichita, Kansas, August 3-14. The Goldpanners are the defending NBC World Series champions.

Hanson began the season in the bullpen but was given a start earlier last week against Anchorage because each AIA pitcher was promised at least one start in Alaska. He limited the Bucs to six hits and two unearned runs over eight innings in a 2-1 loss, earning him another start, which was Sunday's game against the Oilers.

"I was just hoping to possibly get noticed," Hanson said in a recent article in the Anchorage Daily News. "I don't throw 90 (miles per hour). I don't strike out 15 a game. But I can get guys out."
