Alaska Christian College Receives Major Grant
SOLDOTNA, AK (August 26, 2003) - Alaska Christian College (ACC) was recently
awarded a $293,000 grant from the Melvin J. Murdock Charitable Trust, a
private foundation headquartered in Vancouver, Washington.
The grant will be used to complete a 36-bed dormitory and to begin work
on a 200-seat dining hall and lodge attached to the dormitory. Classes
at ACC begin on September 15 and the school hopes to have the dormitory
in working condition by then.
The M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust is named for noted entrepreneur and
philanthropist Melvin J. (Jack) Murdock, a native of Portland, Oregon,
who was involved in charitable interests throughout his life. Its
mission is to enrich the quality of life in the Pacific Northwest by
providing grants to organizations that seek to strengthen the region's
educational and cultural base in creative and sustainable ways. The
organization's website is www.murdock-trust.org.
ACC president Keith Hamilton stated that the school applied for the
Murdock grant last August - Murdock grants are often given for those
seeking to improve education and scientific research. The school has
also applied for two other grants, which would help in the construction
project needs and with an education-extension program called Encore.
Encore students take classes at a local community college in preparation
for pursuing a four-year college education. Hamilton added that a third
phase of the construction project, another dormitory, is in the planning
stages.
"Thanks be to God for his faithful provision and the Murdock Trust that
believes fully in what we are doing as we reach young people with whole
life discipleship," said Hamilton about the recent grant.
ACC, which is sponsored by the Evangelical Covenant Church of Alaska
region, begins its third year of classes this fall. A total of 36
students, mostly native Alaskans, have graduated from ACC during its
initial two years. This fall, ACC will have 20 students for its one-year
program and another 12 for the Encore program, which will allow
continuing students to stay a part of the spiritual life of ACC while
obtaining an Associate's degree.
Work teams or individuals are needed to help with the final preparations
of the new dormitory at ACC. For more information about the school and
its construction needs, call Hamilton at 907-260-7422 or email him at:
