Stevie Wonder Pays Surprise Visit to Church
LENNOX, CA (September 24, 2003) - Nuevas de Gozo (Glad Tidings) Covenant
Church has gotten plenty of support in raising funds for a new building,
but it didn't hurt to have a notable musician give an appearance to help
the effort recently.
On September 7, the church was hosting a Sunday evening service to raise
building funds and dedicate a CD that was put together with the help of
singer Danny Carreras, the son of longtime pastor Teodoro and a
part-time bodyguard for well-known performer Stevie Wonder. As Danny and
a band comprised of fellow parishioners performed selected CD songs for
the 400 in attendance, Stevie Wonder and some bodyguards arrived at the
church in a Humvee vehicle. He then walked up to the front of the
church and sang a slightly changed version of his hit song "I Just
Called to Say I Love You," singing instead, "I just called to say God
loves you."
According to a recent story on the Pacific Southwest Conference (PSWC)
website, Wonder gave a short testimony, along with singing a few more of
his songs. He also sang one number in Spanish and took time to visit
with and pose for pictures with some of the attendees at the end of the
evening.
The September 7 concert was one of many events during the past 18 months
that have helped Nuevas de Gozo Covenant raise $62,000 for a new
facility. The church of 185 members (with an average worship attendance
of 300) was approved as a Covenant church at the June 2003 Annual
Meeting of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Rosemont, Illinois. The
congregation's current building holds just 125 people, forcing the
church to conduct three services on Sunday mornings.
Danny Carreras, a Los Angeles Police Department detective, has been a
positive force both inside and outside the church. He and other gifted
musicians in the church wrote, arranged and recorded "Soy Diferente"
(I'm Different), which has been heard recently on a local Christian
radio station. His father hopes it is just one way of meeting the needs
of the community of Lennox, which is near Los Angeles.
"Through the music we are touching lives," pastor Carreras said. "People
are coming to the Lord, plus we're raising funds to continue in the work
that the Lord has allowed us to do in this city. It's all about people
and connecting them to their Heavenly Father."

La iglesia "Nuevas de Gozo" en Lennox, CA esta experimentando un dilema
maravilloso. El numero de la congregación ha aumentado tanto que
necesitan un edificio mas amplio. Actualmente se hacen tres servicios
los Domingos porque el local que usan solo tiene cupo para 125 personas.
Teodoro Carreras, pastor de "Nuevas de Gozo" por mas de 25 años, explica
"Nuestra congregación ya no cabe en este edificio.. Hemos visto la
necesidad de un edificio mas grande para poder servir a la comunidad y
para alabar a nuestro Señor..."
Hace aproximadamente un año y medio la congregación de habla-hispana de
"Nuevas de Gozo" ha estado recaudando fondos para construir un edificio
nuevo vendiendo comida, artesanías, etc. Este año el hijo del Pastor
Carreras, Danny Carreras, preguntó como podía ayudar el. Danny, quien
trabaja como detective para el Departamento de Policía en Los Angeles,
se puso de acuerdo con los músicos de la congregación para grabar su
primer disco de música Cristiana en español. Siendo Danny un talentoso
vocalista, esta era la primera vez haciendo un proyecto como este. "Soy
Diferente", el titulo del CD fue compuesto, arreglado, y grabado por el
talentoso grupo musical de la congregación "Nuevas de Gozo". Danny
espera que las ventas del CD recaude fondos para el nuevo edificio y que
enriquezca las vidas de sus oyentes.
El domingo, 7 de septiembre de 2003 hubo un servicio especial por la
noche para dedicar el nuevo CD, asimismo para recaudar fondos. Danny dio
un concierto cantando algunos de sus temas del nuevo CD. Mas de 400
personas asistieron al servicio teniendo que dividir el concierto en dos
partes. Lo bueno llego cuando, en la segunda parte del concierto, Stevie
Wonder se presento en su lujoso Hummer. Stevie vino a apoyar a Danny,
quien también trabaja como guardia para Stevie. Al final del servicio,
Stevie dio un testimonio corto, y canto unos cuantos cantos y uno en
español. Después del servicio Stevie se quedo a firmar unos cuantos
autógrafos.
El Pastor Teodoro y Danny creen que el servicio de dedicación fue un
gran éxito para el CD y para los fondos. Una estación de radio en Los
Angeles también esta promocionando algunos temas del CD de Danny. Sin
embargo, Danny y su padre están de acuerdo que las ventas del CD no es
lo mas importante. Danny comenta, "Toda la gloria sea a Dios, queremos
tocas vidas y oramos que el Espíritu Santo vaya con cada CD, y que toque
y consuele los corazones de aquellos necesitados." El Pastor Teodoro
agrega, "Através de la música, estamos tocando vidas. La gente se esta
convirtiendo a Dios, y los fondos recaudados nos permiten continuar con
la obra que Dios nos ha dado en esta ciudad." El propósito es conectar a
la gente con el Padre Celestial.
