CHICAGO, IL (October 3, 2003) - North Park University (NPU) will host a one-day symposium on the Hip Hop culture in Viking Hall on October 11 with noted Hip Hop expert Bakari Kitwana as the keynote speaker.

The symposium, which runs from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., is entitled Hip Hop: The Voice of the Community - Exploring Christianity, Culture and the Hip-Hop Movement. It is sponsored by the Center for Youth Ministry Studies.

Kitwana, who wrote The Hip Hop Generation and The Rap on Gangsta Rap, has been the executive editor of The Source, the editorial director at 3rd World Press and a music reviewer for National Public Radio's "All Things Considered." In addition, rap artist and speaker Fred Lynch and Dr. Rupe Simms, professor of Afrikaca studies at North Park, will participate in a panel discussion with Kitwana.

The October 11 symposium will cost $10 in advance or $12 on the day of the event. Student fees are $5. For more information, call the university's Center for Youth Ministry Studies at 773-244-5207 or visit the center's website at www.northpark.edu/cyms.
