Vikings Lose Conference Opener to Illinois Wesleyan
BLOOMINGTON, IL (October 5, 2003) - After taking a 7-3 lead late in the third
period Saturday, North Park University (NPU) gave up 24 unanswered points
and lost 27-7 at Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) in its College
Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) football opener.
NPU quarterback Phil DeWald's 15-yard run put the Vikings ahead with 4:37
left in the third quarter, capping a drive that took 10 plays and totaled
70 yards. From there, however, coach Robin Cooper's team managed just 14
yards in 13 offensive plays as the
Titans rallied.
Matt Ross' 35-yard run with 2:15 remaining in the third put IWU ahead to
stay at 10-7. The Titans intercepted a DeWald pass and scored on Ryan
Klesath's 24-yard field goal with 10:59 left in the game. Ryan Spellman's
7-yard run at the 8:18 mark and a Ross 2-yard run with 5:35 left iced the
contest.
Spellman had 121 yards rushing and Ross added 95 more as IWU rushed 51
times for 332 yards. NPU held IWU's passing game to just 111 yards as
Alfredo Cruz had an
interception in the first period to thwart one Titan drive. Cruz had six
solo tackles, seven assists while Durell Dawson had five solos, nine
assists and Scott Souza had 10 solo tackles and a pair of assists.
DeWald led all NPU rushers with 58 yards and threw for 91 more by
completing half of his 20 passes. Jon Harris grabbed five passes for 40
yards for the Vikings (2-2 overall, 0-1 in the CCIW).
NPU plays a 7 p.m. CCIW game at North Central College on Saturday.
In other sports action on Saturday:
- The NPU women's soccer team raised its record to 4-6-1 with a 1-0
non-league win over visiting Concordia University of River Forest. Abbie
Frank was credited with the goal for the Vikings, scoring kicking a ball
off a Concordia defender near the goal at the 82:04 mark. NPU plays
non-league opponent Benedictine University at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
- NPU's men's soccer team got three goals from Nick Bruckner and two
goals and three assists from Isaac Lee to rout Concordia 8-1 in non-league
play. The Vikings, now 8-1-2 this season, play host to Millikin University
at 3 p.m. Saturday in CCIW play.
- The Vikings volleyball squad went 1-2 at the Wheaton Thunder
Invitational Saturday at King Arena, beating Olivet College of Michigan
30-11, 30-18, 23-30, 30-26
for its lone victory. NPU hosts Augustana College in a 7 p.m. CCIW home
match on Tuesday.
