Wheaton Covenanter Coaches 250th Tennis Win
WHEATON, IL (October 6, 2003) - Jane Nelson of Beverly Covenant Church in Chicago
won her 250th match as coach of the Wheaton College women's tennis team as
the Thunder defeated Illinois Wesleyan University 6-3 last Saturday.
Nelson has been coaching the women's tennis team at Wheaton since 1986
after having starred in tennis and women's basketball at Wheaton before
graduating in 1983. Her school has won 10 College Conference of Illinois
and Wisconsin (CCIW) titles since 1986 - her overall record is 251-99 after
Wheaton beat Millikin University 9-0 after defeating Illinois Wesleyan on
Saturday. The Thunder was second in the CCIW team competition last fall
after winning four straight titles.
Once an All-America doubles tennis player and a national champion singles
performer in her college division, Nelson also scored 1,182 points in her
Wheaton basketball playing career and coached in the program after leaving
college. She was inducted into Wheaton's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994.
