Swedish Hospital Cancer Program Given Top Rating
CHICAGO, IL (October 7, 2003) - Swedish Covenant Hospital has received three-year
approval as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program (COMP) by the
Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
This recognition is the highest approval rating given by the national
commission to a community hospital, indicating that Swedish Covenant
Hospital's cancer program has been given full approval and meets all
mandatory standards set by the American College of Surgeons.
The news was greeted warmly by those attending Monday's recognition
ceremony in the Galter Pavilion, including Evangelical Covenant Church
(ECC) President Glenn Palmberg. "Receiving this designation means that our
cancer program has demonstrated to the Commission on Cancer that we are
dedicated to providing our patients the best care possible in a comfortable
community setting," said K. Joseph Philip MD, section chief of the
hospital's division of oncology/hematology and chairman of the Cancer
Activities Committee. "Receiving care through a Commission on
Cancer-approved program ensures patients are getting state-of-the-art care
from a multidisciplinary team designed to coordinate the best treatment
options available."
Swedish Covenant Hospital and its medical staff offer a full range of
diagnostic and cancer treatment services. The physicians are
board-certified in the major medical specialties, including oncology, and
ongoing clinical research and weekly cancer conferences are conducted to
disseminate pertinent information to the hospital's interdisciplinary
oncology team.
Partnerships with premier cancer research and treatment organizations make
it possible for cancer patients at Swedish Covenant to access the latest
treatment technologies in research studies. The hospital's collaborative
relationship with Midwest Cancer Research Group gives Swedish Covenant
Hospital's cancer patients access to leading cancer research studies and
innovative cancer treatment options. Through the Midwest Cancer Research
Croup, Swedish Covenant oncologists can collaborate with the Robert H.
Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern University, enabling
patients to participate in prominent national studies conducted by the
Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group. Studies are available for treatment of
many different types of cancer, including the most prevalent cancers of the
breast, colon, lung and prostate.
Approval by the Commission on Cancer is given only to those facilities that
have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment
of cancer and to undergo a rigorous evaluation process and performance
review. Swedish Covenant is one of only three Chicago hospitals with COMP
designation.
"We are proud of the staff who made this accreditation possible," said Mark
Newton, president and CEO of Swedish Covenant Hospital, in opening the
recognition ceremony. "It is recognition of the quality of Swedish Covenant
Hospital's comprehensive cancer care and ability to offer the best
treatments and services to our community."
Swedish Covenant Hospital, which operates under the direction of ECC's
Covenant Ministries of Benevolence, is a comprehensive healthcare facility
providing health and wellness services to the communities of Chicago's
north side. As one of the few independent, nonprofit hospitals in the area,
Swedish Covenant Hospital remains focused on its mission of compassionate
care. More than 500 physicians join the Hospital's nurses and professional
staff to strengthen a foundation of excellence established more than 117
years ago into a tradition that will endure.
