Approval Given for Eastridge (OR) Building Project
CLACKAMAS, OR (October 7, 2003) - Eastridge Covenant Church received written
approval from Clackamas County on Monday and will be allowed to build a
32,665-square-foot church facility located just off Southeast Sunnyside
Road, a project that had drawn opposition from some nearby residents.
Tuesday's edition of the Portland Oregonian reports that Clackamas
County land-use hearings officer Joe Turner has filed written approval of
the church's plans. He included numerous requirements relating to access,
parking, traffic movement and design for the 8.8-acre building site.
The church hopes to build a multipurpose building capable of seating 800
people for worship services, as well as classrooms, office space, an
outdoor amphitheater and a 268-space parking lot. Terry Shoman, a spokesman
for the church in charge of the building committee, said the church hopes
to begin construction next spring and to hold its first services by
Christmas 2004. Shoman added that procurement of the conditional use permit
that would allow the church to begin the project has taken four years to
obtain. The church hopes that the community can take advantage of the
facilities for varied activities.
"I'm excited," said Shoman about the recent news. "Our capital campaign
'Building Lives on Faith' is starting this week. We're at two services at
the local junior high and we're twice as large as we were when we started
this process. God's been more than faithful in this."
Residents of a subdivision south of the proposed church had complained that
the church's plans to use a nearby street as an access road would increase
traffic congestion in the neighborhood.
Eastridge Covenant Church was organized in 1993 and has an average worship
attendance of 622, according to Covenant Yearbook figures. It is
located in a city of 35,000, about 10 miles southeast of Portland. Dwain
Tissel is the church's senior pastor.
