Land Donated for Norway (MI) Construction
NORWAY, MI (October 10, 2003) - A local farmer's generosity has benefited an
entire town's spiritual life, which is good news for the Evangelical
Covenant Church of Norway.
The church is nearly finished with construction of a 12,700-square-foot
facility that
includes a sanctuary and gymnasium. A farmer in town who had attended the
church as a boy, Dan Olson, donated the land for the building. Olson split
his property into five parcels and gave one of the parcels to the Covenant
church, said pastor Jim Danielson. Other parcels were given to three other
Protestant congregations in town and the fifth was
donated to Norway for a museum. When Danielson asked Olson what prompted
the unique gift, Olson said, "The Bible says we're supposed to tithe and I
decided to do it all at one time."
Danielson said that church hopes to be using the new facility in November,
although an official date has not been set. Parking lot paving and placing
floor coverings are among the final details, said Danielson. The
Evangelical Covenant Church of Norway has been using its current building
since 1898.
A retired contractor, Marvin Pollard, has been one of many volunteers whose
efforts have saved the church substantial amounts of money in the
construction phase, Danielson added. Pollard has also donated equipment to
aid the project.
The Covenant church in Norway is located in the Upper Peninsula of
Michigan. Danielson is a child of the church and had been pastor of a local
Baptist congregation before taking an interim position at the church of his
youth. He has been the full-time pastor there for nine years.
