Kid's Kloset Dedicated in Portland (OR)
PORTLAND, OR (October 16, 2003) - Parishioners gathered for the dedication of the
Kid's Kloset at First Covenant Church on October 5 as the church's ministry
continues to get plenty of use from the community.
More than 225 families get clothing donations every month, including many
immigrant families, according to a recent church newsletter story about the
ministry. The Kid's Kloset is open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Mondays,
Tuesdays and Wednesdays at a renovated garage adjacent to the church. It is
stocked with everything from diapers to blankets and coats. Most of the
clothing is for children, but there also adult items, along with other
household items.
The outreach ministry began April 13, 1998, and was operated out of the
church office - First Covenant Church in Seattle, Washington, helped get
the ministry going, along with pastor Alan Johnson and Kurt Carlson of
First Covenant in Portland. A total of 197 people were served during the
first year of existence.
Arnold Karn is providing much of the current leadership, soliciting
donations of clothes from businesses and bringing them to the church by
bus. An Easter outreach, movie nights and a Thanksgiving event have been
added to the weekly clothes distribution ministries. Some of the children
whose families use Kid's Kloset have come to the church's Vacation Bible
School and even made decisions for Christ. Karn's dedication and the
dedication of volunteers from the church like Emily Mangels and daughter,
Rebekah, is not lost on the congregation, reported Debbie Marr in her fall
newsletter article.
"We're so proud of Arnold (Karn) and his team and his heart for reaching
out to people in the name of Jesus Christ," said pastor John Wenrich, whose
wife, Julie, has been volunteering at Kid's Kloset. "We are excited to see
the Kid's Kloset move to the next level of effectiveness."
