Alpine Hopes to Be Operational by November 14
BLUE JAY, CA (November 4, 2003) - One would find it difficult to believe that
Alpine Covenant Conference Center was at one point threatened with total
destruction from fires that swept the area during the past several days.
That characterizes the report from Stan White, Alpine's executive
director of Alpine, when he spoke with the Pacific Southwest Conference
office earlier today.
White returned to the conference center around 10:30 p.m. Monday night.
"There is no evidence of any smoke, smell of smoke, or ash," White
reported. "You would never guess there was a major wildfire within a
mile of this place. It is still as peaceful and serene here as ever."
White reports only minor wind damage, "but that's it. The power is not
on, but should be later today." The big project will be cleaning out the
refrigerators and walk-in freezer, but staff members hope to be
completely operational by November 14. A men's conference scheduled for
this weekend has been rescheduled for November 21-22, noted conference
Supt. Evelyn Johnson.
The accompanying photo, showing the plume of smoke in the early hours of
the San Bernardino Mountains fire, was taken by Don Meyer, executive
minister of the Department of Communication, as he was returning from a
conference speaking engagement in that area.
