A Look at What Covenant Students Are Doing This Winter
CHICAGO, IL (January 10, 2004) - From serving Christmas dinners, to "rockin'
the night away," students at numerous Covenant churches throughout the
world have been making an impact in their communities.
Here is a short list of how some of our youth and young adults have been
spending their time in recent weeks.
CENTRAL
- Crest Hill, Illinois: Mari Baly was the 2003 Lucia Queen at the Good
Shepherd Evangelical Covenant Church Lucia pageant. A junior at
Wilmington High School, she runs for the school track and field team and
has also had poetry published on Poetry.com.
- Elgin, Illinois: Students at the Evangelical Covenant Church held a
Christmas dinner on December 21 and served over 175 people, including
parishioners, visitors and families of those receiving gifts as part of
a ministry called Angel Tree. Congregational members helped by donating
turkeys and giving funds to make the event a success.
MIDWEST
- Lincoln, Nebraska: First Evangelical Covenant Church student Rachel
Anderson is serving on the executive planning committee for the city's
Martin Luther King Day Rally, a citywide youth event on January 19. The
honor roll student also plays on her East High School girls basketball
team this winter and plays softball and soccer during the school year,
along with singing in the school choir and participating in church
activities.
NORTHWEST
- Minneapolis, Minnesota: Ian Taylor of Bethlehem Covenant Church, a
junior at Minnehaha Academy, is a principal cellist for the Greater Twin
Cities Youth Symphony and plays in the school orchestra. He also plays
basketball at the school and will captain the football team in the fall.
This month, Ian and his parents appeared at the "Live at the Landmark"
series at the Schubert Club in downtown Minneapolis during a January 15
noon performance.
PACIFIC SOUTHWEST
- Santa Barbara, California: Montecito Covenant Church's Hanna Willis
and Lauren Enright, juniors at Santa Barbara High School, recently
participated in the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C.
The conference serves as a training ground for students to learn
leadership skills from some of the most influential people in the United
States. About 400 high school juniors and seniors attended and
participated in a Model Congress session, mock trials and tours to
various sites, among other things. They also had an opportunity to meet
with state senators and local representatives.
SOUTHEAST
- Silverhill, Alabama: The Evangelical Covenant Church of Silverhill
hosted a 12-hour ROCK-A-THON and raised nearly $1,500 for World Relief,
said part-time youth pastor Tina Grider. A total of 15 junior high and
high school students participated and received kudos from Jim Sundholm,
executive director of Covenant World Relief.
- Greensboro, North Carolina: Trinity Church began an Upward Ministry
basketball program and has attracted 100 children for basketball and
another 20 for cheerleading. Teams practice Monday and Thursday at the
church's Life Center and games are played on Saturdays for those in
grades K-6.
ELSEWHERE
- Taichung, Taiwan: Matthew Dwight, son of Covenant missionaries Don
and Lillian Dwight, is a tenth grade student at Morrison Academy, where
his dad is a teacher and athletic director. He enjoys playing the French
horn, played soccer for his school team and now services as student
manager for the junior varsity basketball team. Brother Andy is in
eighth grade and enjoys soccer along with playing cello and bass guitar.
Sisters Megan and Olivia are in sixth grade. Megan sang for an English
CD for the Taichung County schools while Olivia is an avid piano player.
