Women Vikings Overcome Augustana College
ROCK ISLAND, IL (January 12, 2004) - Megan Slattery scored 25 points and put
her team ahead for good with two field goals with under five minutes
left as the North Park University (NPU) women's basketball team defeated
Augustana College 68-58 Saturday afternoon.
The win raised North Park's record to 9-4, 2-1 in College Conference of
Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play and bettered the team's win total
from last season. The Vikings play host to Millikin University in a 7:30
p.m. CCIW game on Tuesday.
Trailing 56-54 with 5:19 left, North Park scored six straight points as
Tiffany Campbell made two foul shots and Slattery scored two inside
baskets. After Jasmine Daniels scored on a jump shot to narrow North
Park's lead to 60-58 with 1:37 remaining, Laura Mount
produced a three-point play and added two foul shots during the next 37
seconds, putting coach Jack Surridge's team ahead 65-58. A free throw by
Shandrel Young and two more by Mount in the final 44 seconds ended the
scoring.
Campbell and Mount had 14 points while Young added 10 points. Young had
10 rebounds and Campbell had five assists to lead their team in those
categories. Julia Selzer had 24 points to lead Augustana, now 10-4, 1-3
in conference.
While the women were able to gain a road victory, the NPU men's team
lost 73-63 at Millikin on Saturday evening in their CCIW opener to fall
to 5-7 overall. Two Brett Mathisen foul shots helped North Park narrow
Millikin's lead to 56-55 with 8:18 remaining, but the Big Blue scored 12
of the next 16 points to ice the contest.
Chuck Williams and Jason Fisher had 22 points apiece for Millikin, now
8-4, 1-1 in conference. Lamar Townsend had 21 points and reserves
Je'Shawn Stevenson and Mathisen scored 16 points apiece for the Vikings.
