Vikings Outscored by Wheaton
CHICAGO, IL (January 28, 2004) - Despite Tiffany Campbell's 12 points, North
Park University (NPU) lost 62-45 to visiting Wheaton College in a
College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin women's basketball game
played Tuesday night.
Erin Wingerter scored 26 points for Wheaton, which raised its record to
14-4, 6-1 in conference. North Park, which was led by Tiffany Campbell's
12 points, fell to 10-8, 2-5, after making just 30 percent of its field
goal attempts (16 of 53).
Megan Long of Community Covenant Church in El Cajon, California, helped
the Thunder force 19 turnovers defensively by producing three of her
team's nine steals. The senior tri-captain added two points and a pair
of assists in her 21 minutes of action as a reserve guard.
A bank shot by Megan Slattery with 7:25 remaining pulled the Vikings
within four points, 41-37. It was as close as the home team would get,
however, as Wheaton scored the next 11 points.
Wingerter was the primary offensive threat in the opening juncture,
having scored 14 points as the Thunder took a 27-21 lead at the half.
Slattery and reserve Angie Watt tallied six points apiece on inside
baskets in the first 20 minutes, but neither was a factor thereafter as
Wheaton forced North Park to make outside shots and the Vikings made
just 6 of 22 field goals from 3-point range, four of them by Campbell.
Slattery and Shandrel Young added eight points apiece and Slattery had a
game high of seven rebounds as North Park kept the game close by
outrebounding the Thunder 37-27.
North Park plays a 2 p.m. conference game at Elmhurst College before
visiting Wheaton in a 7:30 p.m. rematch next Tuesday.
