Walnut Creek Church Funds Water Project in India
NIZAMPATNAM, INDIA (March 4, 2004) - A new water delivery and storage project
was recently dedicated, made possible by the generosity of Hillside
Covenant Church in Walnut Creek, California, working in close
partnership with Covenant World Relief and the India Rural Evangelical
Fellowship (IREF).
The water project is providing fresh water for the first time to
children residing at the Nizampatnam Home as well as other residents of
the village, according to Elliott Johnson, director of
finance/controller for the Evangelical Covenant Church who also serves
as treasurer for IREF. Johnson has served with IREF since 1985.
Hillside donated more than $20,000 in July 2002 to fund the project,
which was administered by Covenant World Relief working in partnership
with IREF. "It took quite some time to work through the necessary
approvals and to complete the actual construction," Johnson said. A well
was dug on property IREF purchased about one and a half kilometers from
the children's home, requiring a pipeline to be laid to service the new
water tower that was constructed.
"In the region surrounding our Nizampatnam Home, water levels have gone
down due to drought for the last two years," noted Emmanuel Rebba,
president of IREF USA and India. The water will serve not only the home,
but all of the people in the village, Rebba added.
Rev. Craig Darling, the American IREF director, cut the ribbon,
officially signaling the project's activation. Rebba's wife, Dee, also
participated (see accompanying photo). The ribbon cutting took place "to
the joy and merriment of the tribal children and all the people of
Nizampatnam who gathered there and participated," Rebba observed. (A
second photo shows village children sharing in a ceremonial dance as
part of the festivities).
"All of us at IREF immensely thank you, the Walnut Creek church mission
committee and the Walnut Creek church for the great help rendered for
these tribal children of God," Rebba said. "We pray God will shower his
blessings on every one of you and your families."
