Los Angeles Church Conducts Preview Service
LOS ANGELES, CA (March 16, 2004) - Church of the Redeemer, a multiethnic
church plant, hosted its first preview service Sunday at the Loren
Miller Community Center.
About 100 people from the community attended worship with a strong mix
of African American and Hispanic participants, according to pastor Danny
Martinez. Pacific Southwest Conference administrator Walter Contreras
was a guest at Sunday's service.
Pastors Danny and Donna Martinez, along with their three children, moved
to South Central Los Angeles as part of the call to plant a multi-racial
church with an emphasis on compassion and justice. Danny Martinez had
recently finished his seminary education at CHET, the Covenant's
Hispanic seminary in Bell Gardens, California, and worked as a youth
pastor at Bell Gardens Covenant Church since August 2001.
Martinez said the work of people like Richard Parks and Erika Carney
Haub has been critical in paving the way for a successful church plant.
The Redeemer Community Partnership has already been active in the
community and Pasadena Covenant Church has helped financially in
partnering with the conference to back the new congregation.
Church of the Redeemer will host its second preview service on Easter
Sunday, April 11. The third preview service is scheduled for May 9 and
Martinez stated that he expects the church to have its grand opening in
the summer.
