Wendell Helps U of M to Hockey Championship
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (March 17, 2004) - Krissy Wendell had a goal and two assists
as the top-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team defeated
No. 6 Minnesota-Duluth 4-2 Sunday afternoon to win the Western
Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Final Five Championship at Ridder
Arena.
Wendell, whose family attends Redeemer Covenant Church in the Twin
Cities suburb of Brooklyn Park, was named Most Valuable Player and was
on the All-Tournament team, along with teammates Kelly Stephens (two
goals on Sunday), Natalie Darwitz and Jody Horak. The win marks the
second time in Golden Gopher Women's Hockey history that Minnesota has
won both the regular season and Final Five WCHA titles.
After Duluth scored the first goal of the game midway through the first
period, Wendell tied the game later in the period. The Golden Gophers
tallied three more times before Duluth produced its final goal to end
the scoring.
Wendell led the team with two goals and four assists in the WCHA Final
Five event. She leads Minnesota in scoring with 70 points, including 32
goals and 38 assists. Wendell played on the U.S. Women's Olympic hockey
team that won a silver medal in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake
City, Utah.
With Sunday's victory, the Golden Gophers (28-4-2 overall) are one of
four teams to be invited to the 2004 NCAA Frozen Four tournament. The
NCAA Committee will announce the field on Sunday. More about Wendell can
