NPU Sports Roundup: Golf Team Does Well
NORMAL, IL (April 29, 2004) - Matt Lindahl of Grace Covenant Church in Iron
River, Michigan, tied for 20th individually as the North Park University
(NPU) men's golf team placed 11th among 20 teams in last weekend's
Illinois Wesleyan Invitational at Ironwood Golf Course.
Lindahl shot an 8-over-par 152 for rounds that occurred Friday and
Saturday, tying with two others. Mike Greer of the University of
Wisconsin-Eau Claire shot a 3-under-par 141 for individual honors.
Other NPU golfers scoring in the team totals included Joel Youngberg and
Peter Johnson, who each shot 155 to tie for 32nd, and Carl Edgren (163).
The Vikings had a team scorer of 625, using the scores of their top four
golfers. St. Ambrose University of Iowa took the team title with a score
of 590.
North Park competes at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin
(CCIW) Championships on Friday and Saturday at the Pontiac Elks Country
Club. Lindahl was second individually last year while Youngberg, who is
from Prairie Hills Covenant Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was
sixth overall.
In other sports news over the weekend from North Park:
- Will Mejia was second in the hammer throw and third in the shot put
as the North Park University men's and women's track and field teams
competed at the North Central College Old Fashioned Track and Field Meet
last Friday in Naperville. Mejia tossed the hammer 47.67 meters for
runner-up honors and threw the shot put 14.14 meters. Other men's
individual performers with top finishes included Dante Britten (third in
the long jump, sixth in the 200 meter dash), Quinton Wilks (fourth in
long jump, fifth in the 200) and Chris Wada (fourth in the 100 and 200)
- Elizabeth Podczaski placed third in the long jump with a leap of
10.07 meters and was eighth in the 200 at North Central. Meanwhile,
Jackie Decker placed third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.06
seconds and finished fourth in the 100 with a 13.87 clocking. Ashley
Edwards was fourth in the 800.
- In rowing, the NPU women's varsity 4 team of Annika Safstrom, Cori
Bowman, Lyndsey Hyatt, Karen Ebner and coxswain Erikka Treatch finished
fifth of 16 entries at the Midwest Collegiate Rowing Championships in
Madison, Wisconsin. Meanwhile, the novice 4 person and 8 person crews
won bronze medals. The Vikings finish their season in Athens, Ohio at
the Mid-American Collegiate Rowing Association (MACRA) Championships
next weekend.
- In softball, NPU dropped double headers on Friday and Saturday to
fall to 10-24 overall. The Vikings dropped a non conference double
header Saturday afternoon to Edgewood College of Madison, Wisconsin, by
scores of 2-1 and 4-2. On Friday, they lost CCIW games at Millikin
University in Decatur by scores of 8-0 and 4-2.
In the opener on Saturday, Kim Walker allowed just five hits in a losing
cause. In game two, NPU opened game two by scoring the game's first run
in the first frame as Molly Mitchell single and Walker doubled. After
Edgewood tied the game, the Vikings took a 2-1 advantage in the third as
Ashley Berg (Evangelical Covenant Church, Urbondale, Iowa) walked and
scored on an error. Edgewood scored three times in the bottom of the
fourth, however. As if Saturday's two losses weren't painful enough,
North Park lost its top hitter, Ritti, after she injured her shoulder in
game two trying to make a fielding play. She entered last weekend's
games hitting .385.
In game two Friday against Millikin, Angie Willner of the Evangelical
Covenant Church of Fairmont, Minnesota, contributed a run scoring double
and Deb Rusthoven drove in another run with a single. North Park ends
its season in the next two days, playing a 3 p.m. double header at
Elmhurst College on Tuesday and a 3 p.m. double header at Wheaton
College on Wednesday.
- NPU's baseball team lost three CCIW games last weekend at Illinois
Wesleyan University in Bloomington despite stellar pitching efforts from
students with Evangelical Covenant Church backgrounds. On Saturday,
Peter Morris of First Covenant Church in Seattle lost 2-1 after allowing
just seven hits. The winning run scored on a passed ball. On Sunday,
Jeff Hanson of Hillside Covenant Church, Walnut Creek, California, lost
a 3-2 decision after striking out 10 in 10 innings. He allowed a homer
to Illinois Wesleyan's top player, Nick Chilczenkowski to lead off the
11th inning. The Vikings will play three games at Augustana College in
Rock Island this weekend.
