First Covenant: Light in the Heart of the City
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (May 6, 2004) - Born out of the immigrant movement from Sweden
in 1874, First Covenant Church has a rich history in the heart of the
Twin Cities.
It was part of the formation of the Evangelical Covenant Church as a
denomination in 1885. From its earliest days, the church desired to be a
place where the good news of Jesus Christ could be heard and people
built up in him in order to spread the gospel message to the ends of the
earth.
"Mission Friends" was a fitting name. In more recent times, the concept
of mission friends has been rekindled at First Covenant. The church
adopted the vision "Giving Hope and Help in the Heart of the City,"
striving to engage the urban community in which it resides for the gospel.
Through new ministries such as MetroKids (a childcare center), the
Nehemiah Center (a partnership with various Christian ministries), Twin
Cities Legal Aid (offering free legal services to those unable to afford
it elsewhere) and by being a gathering place for a host of Christian
ministries, the church truly is a light for Christ in the heart of the city.
