Valley Covenant to Celebrate 50 Years of Ministry
DURBAN, MB (May 14, 2004) - Former Evangelical Covenant Church of Canada Supt.
Albert Josephson will be the guest speaker as Valley Evangelical
Covenant Church celebrates 50 years of ministry July 17-18.
The event theme is "Looking to Jesus," said the church's pastor David
Johnson. The celebration will begin with a picnic at noon on July 17 at
the former Alpine Covenant Church, which is 20 miles from Valley
Covenant. A "Come and Go Tea" will be held at Valley Covenant from 2 to
4 p.m. that afternoon and a dinner and hymn sing will be held in the
evening, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The church is inviting former pastors to
speak about the church's heritage. On Sunday, July 18, Rev. Josephson
will speak at the church's 10:30 a.m. worship service, which will
include special music.
Valley Evangelical Covenant Church has a connection with Alpine Covenant
Church, which was formed in 1934. In 1954, a small Sunday
school/fellowship group near Durban and a contingent of Covenanters from
Alpine Covenant helped start the Valley Covenant congregation, sharing a
pastor for a time with the older church. Eventually, Alpine merged with
Valley Covenant in 1968. Josephson grew up at Alpine Covenant Church and
a handful of other current or former Canada Conference ministers grew up
in and around the Alpine/Durban region.
Currently, the congregation is located in a small town in Manitoba,
about five hours northwest of Winnipeg. Many travel 15 to 20 miles to
attend worship services - the nearest Covenant congregation is located
in Norquay, Saskatchewan, less than an hour away. The average worship
attendance during the past decade is around 100, Johnson said. An active
youth program under Tim Friesen has flourished at the church and a
children's Kid's for Christ program that runs 10 weeks in the fall has
brought many to the church and to Christ.
