North Park Celebrates Commencement; More Than 300 Graduate


CHICAGO, IL (May 15, 2004) - North Park University celebrated its 111th Commencement last Saturday (May 8) as President David G. Horner presented 277 undergraduate degrees and 76 graduate degrees to students representing 18 different countries.

During Saturday's ceremony, Christopher Nelson of Paxton, Illinois, received the Ahnfeldt Medallion as the undergraduate student with the best academic record. Melissa Vélez of both Bayside, New York, and Chicago, along with Daniel Dierenfeld of Nicollet, Minnesota, received Senior Par Excellence Awards from the office of student development for their involvement and leadership on campus and service to the community.

Katie Hengeveld of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and John David Welander of Pomeroy, Iowa, received Outstanding Senior Awards in recognition of academic excellence as well as extraordinary leadership on and off campus. Besides embodying the principles and spirit of North Park University, they also had grade-point averages of 3.50 or above (on a 4.0 scale).

North Park presented Elizabeth Buccheri, founder and director of Chamber Music at North Park, and 1962 North Park graduate Bruce Carlson with honorary doctor of fine arts degrees. Sambe Duale and Byung Doo Cho, received honorary doctorates in science and law respectively for their contributions to society.

A host of seniors were recognized for academic achievements at North Park's Honors Convocation last month. Along with Nelson (Biblical Studies) and Hengveld (Spanish), outstanding students in their respective fields of study included: Katherine Hengveld (Spanish); Julie Larson (Sociology); Tiffany Tarrant (Business and Nonprofit Management); Stephanie Sheffield (First performance-Music); Jessica Oliver (Second performance-Music); Heidi Johnson (Academic Excellence-Music); Susan Golland and Lauren Hoffman (English); Christopher Lopez-Cepero (Philosophy); Kelly Nelson and Rebecca Perry (Studio Art awards); Erin Papageorge and Jennifer Leuth (Education awards); Kyle Mecher and Timothy Ruby (History); Christopher Hall, Aaron Adelsman, Rachel Johnson and Marci LaRouech (Communication Arts); Lesley Foglia (Politics/Government); Bryce Carlson (Political Science/Law); Rosalinda Rivera, Leonard Olson, Larry Katz and Duane Cole (GOAL Adult Learning) and Melissa Velez, Alicen Prikkel, Tim Peterson and Jokya Sanders (Student Leadership).

Scholarship and Memorial gifts were given to many others (both seniors and non-seniors) at the Honors Convocation. They are mentioned by department, including:
