Saturday Memorial Service for Grace Johnson
BATAVIA, IL (July 22, 2004) - A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m.
Saturday at The Holmstad for former Covenant missionary Grace Johnson,
who died July 6.
Grace and her husband, Dr. Fernly Johnson, lived in Congo during the
1970s, according to Covenant missionary Robert Thornbloom. Dr. Johnson
served as personal physician to Mobutu Sese Seko, president of Congo,
serving at an elite hospital in Kinshasa called Mama Yemu Hospital.
During their time in Congo, Dr. Johnson also took some of his volunteer
hours to help missionary doctors in Karawa and the Imeloko hospitals.
Grace's hospitality was always appreciated by the mission/church
community in Congo. The Johnsons later returned to Chicago and Dr.
Johnson worked at Swedish Covenant Hospital for a time. The Johnsons
also were involved for a long time with a Covenant church in Villa Park,
Illinois, Thornbloom added.
More information may be obtained by emailing Holmstad chaplain Dan
